Thean Hou Temple of Sungai Lembing has 110 years of history!!!,… would you like to know its story?
Thean Hou Temple of Sungai Lembing was constructed beside the Sungai Lembing river. Due to its geological location and the perennial threat of flooding, the temple was constructed on higher ground which became unique landscape and created a beautiful scenery.
Throughout history, Sungai Lembing had suffered from fire in 1912, flood in 1926 and followed by the Japanese occupation. Consequently, all of its historical document was destroyed. The only way one could trace the origin of the temple is based upon the remnant plaque near the temple. From the information on the plaque, we believe that the temple was founded in 1911 by ancestors of Hainanese descent.
In 1912, a huge fire happened at Sungai Lembing where all the buildings were destroyed. PCCL mining company which was active then planned the rebuilt of the city. Sungai Lembing was divided into South street, North street, South Canton Street, North Canton Street and Jawa Street. According to the old folks, Thean Hou temple of Sungai Lembing was moved from North Canton street its current address.
According to records at the Sungai Lembing Library, Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing (a.k.a Persatuan Kheng Chew Sungai Lembing then), was founded in 1910. It was located at the fields during the early years then it was moved to North Canton Street in 1925. Unfortunately, its operation was forced to stop due to unknown reason but was reactivated in 1940. 24 years later, in 1964, the people in that area constructed a new building for the association and named it as Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing.
The Thean Hou Temple was built behind the Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing facing the river. It is a temple of Chinese Sea Goddess of Mazu it is hoped that Mazu would keep them safe from natural disasters, especially floods.

Thean Hou Temple of Sungai Lembing was founded by the ancestors of Hainanese decent. Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing is their ally. As a result, there is a strong relationship amongst the Hainanese, Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing and Thean Hou Temple. These three parties are very closed to each other. The president during that particular time was Phua Tin Meng.
In the year of 1964, the PCCL general manager H.R.M Hodding and the founder of Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing Phua Tin Meng held the opening ceremony for the Thean Hou Temple.
Sungai Lembing was developed in 1868 by the Chinese community and where there is a Chinese community, there would be a temple. Persatuan Kheng Chew Thean Hou temple was one of the praying place, in the early years. However with the closure of PCCL Tin Mining company, many residents moved out of the city to look for jobs. This left the temple unattended for a period of time, ……until Sungai Lembing was transformed into a tourist attraction.
Since 2014, Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing started to generate income by using its building. The upper floors of the building was turned into a homestay and the ground floor became restaurants and coffee shops.

In 2017, Dato’ Dr Sunny Chan See Meow was elected as the new president for Persatuan Hainan and Thean Hou Temple Sungai Lembing. Once he assumed his role, he lead the congregation to carry out a series of transformation works which included establishment Hainan style archway; rebuilt and renovated the Sungai Lembing riverbank; set up variety of statues at the temple ,for example the 12 Zodiac, Water Spraying Dragon Turtle, Lucky Elephant, etc. All these efforts were done to promote and attract more tourists to Sungai Lembing and spread the culture of the Hainanese.
In the year of 2018, the statue of Mazu was erected with the height of 26 ft and 6 inches, it is the biggest Mazu statue in Malaysia which cost around RM 300,000.00. In the third phase of the renovation work, according to Dato’ Sunny, they will continue to beautify the temple to continue spreading the Hainanese culture.
In April 2019, the Mazu statue with the measurement of 3.65x 3.65 x 8.07 metres was recorded in the book of Malaysia as the biggest Mazu statue in Malaysia. In the same year, a giant mural was drawn at the Persatuan Hainan Sungai Lembing, recording the history of Hainanese migration to Sungai Lembing. The mural has 2 themes which are Black & White and Colorful. The black and white version represented the Mazu gave protection to the migrant all the way from Hainan to Malaysia, whereas the Colourful version emphasized the progress of transformation of Sungai Lembing street from the post- PCCL era until the rise of Sungai Lembing as famous tourist spot. The mural measured 300 metres long and 20 metres high.

At the lucky garden of Thean Hou Temple, in addition to the Mazu statue, there is also a stone prosperous god located next door. According to Dato’ Sunny, this stone prosperous god was found near to the Thean Hou temple around riverbank, weighing around 5 tons. According to a well-known master, this prosperous god was from Thailand 2000 years ago and was ‘flown’ through the river to Sungai Lembing, to distribute wealth.
The stone prosperous god statue experienced 3 times of major flood at Sungai Lembing. According to the Dato’ Sunny, the stone will be consecrated soon.
At the beginning of 2021, Sungai Lembing suffered it worst flood since 2001.
Furnitures at Thean Hou Temple such as chairs and tables were swept away by huge waves and the surrounding trees were washed by the water,……but the statue of Mazu remains which is believed to be continue protecting the Sungai Lembing residents. The Thean Hou Temple was built at higher ground, so even the flood water exceeded 7 metres high, it is still intact during major floods. This has shown the wisdom and far-sighted vision of ancestors when they constructed the temple.
Dato’ Dr Sunny Chan See Meow hoping your kindness for the donation of construction fund
